OUR STORY
Remember where you were during the height of the Pandemic? Now, imagine graduating college during that chaotic time. Tough, right? We felt it too. So, we did what felt natural - we headed back home, back to the Sound. We craved that connection to simpler times, that therapy the Sound offered. And then it hit us - why keep this magic to ourselves? Why not share the essence of Long Island Sound with everyone? That's when BRAKISH was born.
A lifestyle brand inspired by the flowing currents of Long Island Sound. A brand made for the shoal, a loosely mixed minded community that shares the same passion for the ocean. It's for the free spirits, the ocean lovers, the ones who understand the allure of brackish water - the mix of salt and freshwater that defines estuaries like the Long Island Sound. Hence our tagline “LIGHTLY SALTED” - get it??
Nico - Founder
As a yout, Nico spent his summers in Niantic, CT crabbing, fishing, and admiring life underwater. Despite his deep connection to the ocean, he never resonated with any nautical brand which fueled his desire to create BRAKISH. A brand that pays homage to the local waters that shaped his life. This is how he coined the phrase "Lightly Salted" - a nod to the intricate balance of freshwater and saltwater that defined both the brand and the nature that inspired it. The only thing left was the logo, which now BRAKISH is most recognized by. Drawing on his love of fishing and the iconic striped bass that populate these waters, Nico created the logo we know and love today.
Steve - Co Founder
Steve established a passion for Long Island Sound from day one, frequenting his families beach houses in Old Lyme and Niantic every summer and eventually moving to Old Lyme full-time a few years ago. Steve spends as much time as he can on or near the water, whether it’s boating to Greenport, NY or Block Island, sitting at The Dock enjoying Cajun shrimp, or even watching the boats get put in and taken out every season from his office in Mago Point. Brakish embodies everything he loves about the water, with a more sustainable way of sharing the love.
